Over the past months, I’ve been experimenting with sculptural
standing pieces where I’ve used carving, texturing, pyrography and
inking to create work that exists solely for the sake of texture and
pattern. I am really enjoying the 3 dimensionality of the carving and
the play of light on the textured surfaces. In addition, the square and
curved polygonal pieces take away the use of the lathe completely
and open up a completely new avenue for me to explore.
Creating these pieces also allows me to use planks that are fairly
easily available - they are Hard Pear and Black Ironwood - indigenous
to the Knysna area - and range in width from 200- 300mm.
